Established 1944

Preservation breeding is an attempt by many animal breeders to preserve bloodlines of animals, either of a rare breed, or of rare pedigrees within a breed. One purpose of preservation breeding is to protect genetic diversity within a species, another is to preserve valuable genetic traits that may not be popular or in fashion in the present, but may be of great value in the future. Preservation breeding can also mean the breeding of animals to populate or repopulate an area where a species previously existed. It can also mean the breeding of species that are healthy and releasing the healthy individuals into a population that is defective or infected for the purpose of strengthening the overall health of the population.

Austin Kennel Club logoThe Austin Kennel Club, established in 1944, is an All Breed Dog Club licensed by the American Kennel Club.  Our members own and show many of the AKC recognized breeds -- ranging from the popular Yorkshire Terrier, which is in the Toy Group, to the Miniature Schnauzer which is a member of the Terrier Group, and everything inbetween! Our members who breed dogs do so in order to improve their breed's conformation, temperament, and genetic health as well as being involved in purebred rescue.

As an All Breed club, one of our main objectives is to further the advancement of all breeds of purebred dogs and the sport of purebred dogs. We also work to protect the interests of purebred dog fanciers in the Austin area and encourage good sportsmanship at all dog events. In order to accomplish these goals, we are involved in many events throughout the year. At some of our monthly meetings, we host an educational program related to dogs. In the past, our programs have ranged from screenings dvds/videos relating to dogs, viewing AKC breed videos, talking to Dog Legislators, and seminars by veterinarians & other dog professionals.
